System: We Are Not Vampires by Lizzie Stark and Jason Morningstar

Welcome to WE ARE NOT VAMPIRES, the reality competition where regular Joes do regular stuff in normal ways! Throughout the program, our competitors will be put to the test, going head-to-head in contests designed to test their humanity in ways both simple and complex. On the line–a quarter million dollars!

In this short larp for four to ten participants, you’ll play vampires (and one imposter) on a wild game show in which they pretend to be humans for money. Perhaps you’ll visit a blood bank, make lunch for a surly teen, or offer a eulogy for a fallen human–all while offering endorsements for the new Carnal Space flavor of Blast Off Energy Drink.

Oh my goodness this was so much fun. The street challenges (especially teaching people how to make spaghetti and couples counseling) were opportunities to act like extra weirdos in front of the normies. The team challenges ended up with “Small Claims Court” where the the contestants entered the Salty Sultan’s Royal Court and competed with claims of who had the smallest item.

Some favorite moments and interactions

  • Constantly telling Mormo how I was going to utterly destroy him with grotesque descriptions of his undoing, and him saying “Ay, you’re a great guy.”
  • Bradathan saying his biggest vampire tragedy was crippling student debt. I offered him an internship in my basement where he could spread sheets.
  • Andrew’s focus on the suffering vampires are supposed to feel was wonderful. Also the twist and suck method for feeding was delightfully contentious!
  • Nabu Sherma’s ferocity and his approximations of human behavior to “go viral”.
  • Lady Strongmore feeling much better about the game once she got to do some stabbing. She stabbed people during an airport commercial (as you do) and then the stabbing continued.
  • Gina @ginayoga and her constant social climbing, backstabbing (figuratively, Lady Strongmore was the big backstabber, but eventually they teamed up and had some good girl energy massacres).
  • Raquel, my queen of the night. She knew all the coffee drinks and hip hop, truly an ambassador to the mortal world! Raquel made alliances (a “girl’s girl), taught others how to emote (Nabu learned the facsimile of crying) and taught our thrall how to walk with sadness in their eyes.

A delightful game from start to finish!
