Actual Play – Dresden Files – Fear and Self-Loathing in Las Vegas (9/5/2008)

The last of our Dresden Las Vegas location posts is up over yonder: http://community.livejournal.com/dresdenfilesrpg/15073.html

You know, now that I’ve run My Life with Master, it just seems perfect to set a game in Las Vegas. Something like My Life with Wynn… Hmmm… but that’s not the point of this post. Here we’re talking about the Dresdenification of Las Vegas. We got together and finished off locations last time. One more meet and we should finish this city. This process has been a absolute blast, but boy has it taken a lot of time.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (Lab, Coroner’s Office, Police Administration)

If the Las Vegas commissioner wants anything it’s a police department that looks like nothing ever happens in it. The administration office is the public face, far from the actual station or booking office. An attractive woman mans the front desk and uniformed officers fill their water cups at the cooler. Calls come in and are quickly routed to the appropriate units. The entire place feels sterile and uninviting. If you scratch just beneath the surface however, the thin façade fades to present a combination of crooked officials and apathetic grunts.

Las Vegas would never admit to having anything like Special Investigations in their police force, but there is a small fraternity of cops who have seen things they can’t explain to anyone else and have banded together as much to protect their own sanity as anything else.

Aspects

  • Bought and paid for – All the heads of the police force have made deals to get where they are now. There isn’t an official who doesn’t regularly receive bribes from the casinos, rich politicians or “other” powerful individuals. Whether or not they are all on the take, the common perception is that they are.

  • Just punching the clock – The average cop may be a decent person, but their job is a 9 to 5 like everyone else. They are trying to get through the day so they can make it to the weekend or poker night. Most cops in the LVPD will take the path of least resistance, which may just mean busting your ass because someone from up high said so.

People

  • +The Craps – An unofficial club of lawmen in the know. Think “The Untouchables”

  • +Jesus Rojas – Vice cop on MAGIC (Metro Area Gang Intelligence Center, seriously!) detail in White Crest Lawns. Former member of the 28th street gang but still has ties and actively hunts their rivals the San Chucos

*Valley of Fire (gateway to the portion of the Nevernever known as the Hunting Grounds or the Old West)
Valley of Fire State Park is located only six miles from Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on exit 75. Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated 1935. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone formations and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. Ancient trees and early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyph.

Aspects

  • Hidden stories behind every rock – Most people drive through the Valley of Fire on the way to Lake Mead and yell out “Look kids, a rock!”. If you take the time to look though, remnants of an entire civilization can be found. Other things as well…

  • I don’t feel alone here – Whether it is the presence of the Native American civilization that live here before, a certain stillness in the air, or the presence of creatures from the Nevernever, the Valley of Fire never feels empty. This startles most, but gives a comforting reassurance to the locals.

People

  • +Donna Wilde – Friendly old woman who knows the trails and seems to know a bit more than that too. She is fit, athletic, and well-prepared (water, sunscreen, first aid equipment, fishing wire line).

  • *The Ranger (Sam Redwing) – Aggressively protective of the park. Bbeing a ranger is a means to an end; deep down his goal is to protect the land.

Nellis Air Force Base
An installation of the Air Combat Command (ACC), Nellis is the location of the United States Air Force Air Warfare Center and is a major training location for both U.S. and foreign military aircrews. The base is named for William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas resident and Air Force P-47 pilot who died in action during the Battle of the Bulge.

Aspects

  • Here we follow regulations – There are no unlit corners, empty laundry baskets or unlatched windows at Nellis. People are admitted based on security clearance. And you don’t have that

  • Dark secrets, shiny tiles – High ranking military officials are constantly coming in and out of Nellis. Projects happen behind closed doors. Closed doors with big AUTHORIZED PERSONAL ONLY signs all over them.

People

  • +The Operative – Handler for Las Vegas attached to Area 51 research projects
Not a wizard but carries a ridiculous amount of magic talismans

  • +“Eye in the Sky” (Darryl White) – Accidentally discovered ley lines through satellite imagery. Non-commissioned officer getting money from a fund he doesn’t really understand. Video-game computer geek who plays World of Warcraft with Billy.
