Troll’s Spire (7/19/2025)

GM: John Powell
Players: Andy, Carl Nelson, Tracy O’Brien, Taylor, Sean Nittner
System: Dragonbane

When the moon is full you can see a tower glittering like a silver spire in the western parts of the valley. A magical tower, no doubt, for none has yet found the way there.

Some say it’s home to an age-old alchemist who long ago incurred the wrath of the dragon emperor. She hid from Eledain in her tower, where she concocted an elixir that gave her everlasting life.

In my continued exploration of OSR games, I was delighted when John Offered to run Dragonbane. I was running the Donut in the morning so was a bit late, but John let me pick a character early (Bastonn Bloodjaw, Wolfkin, fashion diva, and perfumer extraordinaire) so it was great to sit down to the table with everything set up!

John started us at the base of the Troll Spire, climbing our way to the top in the moonlight. There were poisoned roses (but oh, their perfume!), a glorious toad with a silver collar (my only real goal was to be besties with the toad!), a witch, harpies, and a puzzle room with ancient treasures. A perfect one-shot session dungeon!

John used an iPad to cover movement (just zooming around the PDF) which seemed like a very promising way to handle mapping for in person games. I think I might try using Owlbear Rodeo in a similar setup. I’ve seen some tutorials on it, so I’m going to dive into those and see if I can find a better way to handle maps than drawing them myself!
