System: Working the Case by Randy Lubin
Collaboratively tell a murder mystery story from the perspective of investigators who are working to solve the case. Start by quickly establishing the setting, victim, and crime scene. Then, dive into the core of the game – revealing one piece of evidence at a time and linking it to one of five suspects. At the end of each round, eliminate a suspect until only one remains. Finally, confront the culprit and determine if justice is served.
In the ways Seizing the Crown was expansive and grew the world, Working the Case was deductive and led to the eventual reveal that it was not the rival politician who had ideological differences or the sibling spy who resented their older and more prestigious sibling that killed the diplomat, but the rival criminal who themselves only had limited time to live.
We also determined that the corporate consortium we worked for, and that owned the mining station on the asteroid was terrible and exploiting everyone involved…so when we found the criminal had done it…we let them get away.
I would have loved to had more names in this game so they were more than the Diplomat, Spy, Botanist, etc, but the evidence reveals were still delightful. And we did it all in under an hour!
