System: The Return of the King

King Agamemnon of Argos, who has been gone for a decade fighting the Trojan war, is coming home at last, covered in glory. He brings with him a war-prize in the form of the Trojan princess Cassandra. Cassandra is a prophet who can see the past and future, but has been cursed by Apollo to always see her accurate visions ignored. Most people simply dismiss her as mad. Clytemnestra, wife of Agamemnon and queen of Argos, has mixed feelings about her husband’s return. In his absence she has taken a lover – his cousin, Aegisthus. There is no love lost between the two men, who have bad blood extending back for generations. For her part, Clytemnestra still burns with rage over Agamemnon’s sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia to Artemis, which was the goddess’s price for fair winds for the Greek invasion fleet. Now the king has returned, and the palace of Argos will not know peace.

The King (played by Lizzie) is back, and as the pitch said…no good would come of it. Here’s how we all felt about each other and the scenes we played:

THE ROCKY SHORE OF MYCENAE.
Agamemnon and Cassandra arrive after a long journey from Ilium. Both share their feelings, one on being home and the other on being enslaved and far from home.

A BALCONY IN THE PALACE OF ARGOS.
Clytemnestra and Aegisthus discuss the arrival of Agamemnon and share their desire to revenge themselves upon him. Agamenmon is weak from travel and tonight he will be exposed as he bathes.

GATES OF THE PALACE OF ARGOS.
Clytemnestra and Aegisthus greet Agamemnon and meet Cassandra for the first time. Perhaps honeyed lies are exchanged.

THRONE ROOM BY DAY.
Clytemnestra and Agamemnon get reacquianted after many years apart. Will it be a
happy homecoming? Will hearts be unburdened?

A GARDEN BY MOONLIGHT.
Aegisthus meets the curious princess from Troy, now enslaved by his cousin. What do
they have in common? Where do their true loyalties lie?

THRONE ROOM BY NIGHT.
Agamemnon and Aegisthus sound each other out over the many things they share,
and the many things that divide them. It will surely be a tense conversation at best.

KING’S BED CHAMBER.
Clytemnestra visits her husband’s concubine, Cassandra, with whom she has much
in common. What will they discuss?

THRONE ROOM BY NIGHT.
Clytemnestra and Aegisthus finalize plans of revenge. Between zero and three people
in the palace will die, most likely by murder. Cassandra may tell Clytemnestra and
Aegisthus that she will be one of them, but the two of them decide who dies.

ROYAL BATH CHAMBER.
Agamemnon prepares for his first bath at home with Cassandra at his side. Both
share their feelings for one another, which may not be pleasant.

OUTSIDE THE ROYAL BATH CHAMBER.
The Watchman stand ineffectual watch as Clytemnestra and Aegisthus enter the
bath and do whatever work they have chosen or has been fated. We only see them enter
and emerge; perhaps after screams. They depart. Iphigenia has a moment and then also
departs.
