Note from after the Game
// IMPORTANT CORRESPONDENCE RE: ITERATION 41 BREAKERS //
I’m on a secure channel, this communication cannot be traced (at least as long as my memory remains my own).
I have some questions I hope you can answer before our next meeting in the Bitin Islands.
Aurelia, you have several aesthetics I’m not privy to. Can you share the details of the following:
- A symbol of my family that commands respect
- A photograph that captures all that I have lost
- Something beautiful my family stole but bears sentimental value to me.
Also, you’re the heir to a legacy known around the world for their shocking discoveries. What discovery is the Pemberton family most known for?
Sebastian, you have bleeding edge tech you wear below the skin. What does it look like when the tech is in use?
You discovered a formula for stable cold fusion, a technology that could have ended scarcity in the world but doesn’t. Do you know who has profited from your discovery? Is it Institution 41, many unknown corporate conglomerates, or someone else?
Morn, since we know about your memory beads, would you consider choosing a 4th Aesthetic that reveals them to those who know what to look for, or are they kept private?
Is it one of your goals to be accepted back by the Acantha people, or have you given up on the idea of ever going “home”?
Thank you for any insight you can share.

Sebastian: I’ve been thinking about what my tech would be based on my areas of research mentioned so far: subdermal kevlar (a scrapped project), optimized prosthetic leg attachments for different terrain, and cold fusion. I’m imagining that the tech might just be various implants useful for daily life–a jawbone conductor for my phone (and comms), sensors for biometrics data, etc.
I definitely cracked cold fusion before I knew the intricacies of patent law, so various energy and oil companies scrambled for it. The whole media circus caught Institution 41’s attention, which is how I got initiated. They helped me keep some rights, but it’s mostly so I can still claim it as my invention, not make any profit from it. Companies are trying to implement it and have had some success in parts of the US, but they don’t have the money or political sway of Big Oil, so there’s always some new legal issue that’s keeping it from going worldwide. I’m pretty bitter about it and don’t talk about it much. Now I focus on projects that are at a much smaller scale and often only take them to 95% complete because I’m paranoid about having my ideas stolen and misused.
Aurelia.
- A symbol of my family: The family crest! We put that shit on everything. Letterhead, vehicles, the gate at the family manor, you name it. If nowhere else, it’s on a pendant I always wear. It depicts an egret with its wings raised. Also an as-yet-to-be-determined family motto in Latin.
- A photograph that captures all that I have lost: A photo of my parents. Dad’s doing the old “saw a woman in half” trick with my mom. He always thought it was a bit old fashioned, but mom loved it, so he indulged her. She quit working as his assistant after she got pregnant with me, but she held onto that photo. Now Dad is dead (or at least as dead as you can be when you work for a shadowy conspiracy that scanned your brain), and I haven’t spoken to mom in years.
- Something beautiful my family stole but bears sentimental value to me: An elegant hardwood cane my grandfather acquired during his travels in the Congo. The ivory handle shaped like an egret head was a later addition. I was just fourteen when he passed, and he left it for me specifically in his will. I never fully understood why though. Grandpa was a man who liked his secrets, and I loved that about him.
Every member of my family has traveled the world in search of the strange and the perverse to add mystery and flair to our illusion acts. My grandfather discovered the sunken city of Kherfu in the reefs of the Canary Islands; some think it may have inspired legends of Atlantis. He got a lot of mileage out of that one on stage.
Morn. Aesthetic: Beads are hidden but sometimes tinkle when he moves. Seek to be accepted among the Acantha? Morn will never give up hope! But he has no plan for how to be accepted back.
