Part 1 of our internal playtest of Children of the Wolf.

A handwritten letter from Pierre Thibault, worn from the distance it had to travel. The ink is smudged and written in a cipher. The words are hastily scrawled, packed tight against each other. Desperation emanates from the page. When decoded it reads:

I’ve finally found it, the Warhorn of Conquest. An artifact used throughout antiquity by powerful warriors, conquerors, and tyrants. I’ve chased this myth for years but it was so close this whole time! Legends say whoever possessed the Warhorn would see victory at terrible cost. Calamities, natural disasters, and plagues would follow the victor until eventually, the Warhorn changed hands, the cycle to start anew.

I was able to find a clue that Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who crossed the Alps over two thousand years ago, had the Warhorn. But after that, it disappeared completely from all records. But, there is a local legend that tells a tale of a loup-garou who chased something powerful through these mountains and hid it, and that the mysterious Children of the Wolf have guarded it to this day. I now believe that artifact is the Warhorn.

All the old folklore of the Red Plague and of terrible calamities befalling the Dents-des-Loups throughout history were the result of the Warhorn. I don’t know where exactly it might be, but I know I am not the only one searching for it now. We need to find the artifact before it falls into the wrong hands. I know my research has attracted outside attention, and I fear I have been followed back to these mountains.

These mountains hold many secrets. Deep, ancient secrets that stretch back to the dawn of history. But I have a small lead. Someone anonymously contacted me, going by the name of “Loup,” who said that they had more information on “the ancient secret that I was seeking”. Supposedly the Warhorn lies within the Tomb of the Great Wolf, which not even I am sure exists.

The mountains are growing more dangerous. A handful of villagers came down with a fever that leaves strange, red, claw-like marks upon the body. Even the weather is wrong, with vicious snowstorms appearing out of nowhere. I fear that these are harbingers of a greater calamity and that whatever power the Warhorn holds is already beginning to spread out into these mountains. We need to find the artifact before anything worse strikes, or someone else finds it first.
